MLK&toast interns at Hatch Show Print!
Well this isn't exactly about Hatch, but it did happen on my way there
this morning.
Today I rode my bike. Two years ago that was a common occurrence, but since moving to Georgia a year ago, I have been on my bike once.
It's a great feeling and I'm so happy to be able to ride again. Weather permitting, I'll be riding the two days a week that I don't drive in... plus to the grocery store and anywhere else I want or need to go.
It took just under 30 minutes to get in today which is awesome because I took my sweet time and took some pictures. I allotted myself an hour, so I also got in quite early and got a cup of oj from Panera. Sweet Sweet Orange Juice.
Today we are printing for the first time at Hatch. I'll update more on that later, but it's pretty cool. We're doing a restrike of super popular coffee poster and we are hand-inking (well, we're really using brayers) them so they are all different.
PLEASE excuse the weirdness of these posts. I've been trying to post everything from my phone, and it keeps either deleting what I write, or spacing it weird or not spacing it at all. When I can be on a computer for any amount of time (granted I'm writing this on a computer right now) I'll fix those annoyances.I was super stoked to climb this yesterday, don't worry mom, I was careful.
Sent from my iPhoneSo. It's the beginning of day 3. I've been trying to figure out how to easily post things on here. Please forgive any misspellings or awkward sentences as I'm writing everything on my iPhone.
Sidenote: Did you know you can't rotate photos on an iPhone? Annoying, but there is an app for that.
So back to Hatch. The first day we definitely covered the most ground. I'm really happy I came into this knowing a fair amount about printing. I probably would have forgotten a lot of information if I hadn't. The other great thing about it, is I can more easily remember the random (and crazy useful) things I didn't already know.I had no idea that the difference between a 10 line Gothic No. 1 & 5 was the width of the stem of the letter. Or that you can determine that it's the same font by comparing that stem (or stroke?) with other letters. (picture #2)
Other ways to determine the font:
-lay the piece on its side next to another piece with the same letter on it.
-compare the nick (rare case- it's the same, but from a different foundry.)
-compare the shoulder. The difference between Franklin Gothic & Farmer's Gothic is obvious in the shoulder. ("The Farmer is Closer to the Ground")
To identify a Clarendon over an Antique font, check out where the serif meets the stem. A Clarendon will be curved, an Antique will not. (pictures #3 & 4)
Fun Facts:
-If a font sports 1 valley or mountain on the sides or in the middle of the serif, it is Bifurcated. (picture #5)
-If it sports 2, it is Trifurcated. (picture #6)
-There are 6 pica (or lines) to an inch & 12 points to a pica.
Pay special attention to Gothic I's. They look very similar to a rule. However, a rule is always 1 or 2 pica wide.
Well, the car is packed up and we are about to hit the road to Nashville. Since we are driving, I went a little nuts on packing and decided to bring a fair amount of books along. Here's the list:
