So here you go. Posters. Designed & Printed by Me while at Hatch. I sure do miss it there!

Fri, 25 Nov 2011 09:16:36 -0800 I'm home. http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/im-home http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/im-home One week ago I was beginning my last day at Hatch. It seems like a dream. I have to keep looking at pictures and the pile of posters behind me to remind me it was all real. Speaking of posters, holy crap. Since we were able to print on Saturdays, I have piles of posters. They will go down significantly after the holidays, but still. Holy Crap. But I'm not complaining.

While in Nashville, I wasn't able to access any of my photos from my "real" camera, every photo I posted was from my phone. Now that I'm home, I'm finally able to look at them and start to get them ready for uploading. It's going to take awhile. I have over 700 pictures on one camera. But I'm going to start. I promise. When they are done, I'll upload them on my flickr account and make them viewable to all.

In the meantime, here are a few.

Sun, 13 Nov 2011 14:50:24 -0800 OMG. Week 9. http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/omg-week-9 http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/omg-week-9 There's a very high chance that this will be my last update while in Nashville. By this time next week I should be packed up and heading back to Marietta. I keep trying to tell myself that in hopes that it will sink in, it's not working.

I said last week that I didn't think I would get any more jobs while I was here, but I actually ended up getting two more this week. One is a summer poster for Vanderbilt and the other is a collage poster for a woman. The summer poster will most likely be printed after I leave, which is kinda sad. It's a 400 quantity, 3 color poster that will have at least two of those colors printed on the Miehle. The other is a 3 color poster in a much smaller quantity... like, 5. I'm assuming that I'll be printing that one this week. With those two, it marks my client jobs at 8.

I really didn't know what to expect from the internship, but I really didn't think I'd have the chance to design, print and work with 8 different clients on my own, plus 2 with Sundy and 1 with all 3 of the other interns. That's a total of 11 posters in 10 weeks. I'm pretty happy with that. Since we have been able to come in on Saturdays to print our own work, my total poster count goes up to 21. Seriously. 21. And you wonder why I'm going to miss this place?

Speaking of Saturdays, I'm so incredibly happy that we have been given the opportunity to work on our own stuff. I'll make sure to post pictures after the holidays of the secret special ones, and when I get some good photos of the others, I'll post those too. Yesterday was my last day to come in on a Saturday, and I printed one of those secret special ones and the 4 'Broken Type' Linocuts that I carved last week. There's a photo of two of them locked up. I'm excited to get home and have the ability to continue to work on those prints, I feel like they have a lot of potential.

Last weekend Jim & Brad were up in Two River's Wisconsin at the Wayzgoose hosted by Hamilton Wood Type. I would absolutely love to go to one of them. Print Nerds, Wood Type & Wisconsin? Yes please.

Last night I went to my first ever Pickin' Party. For all of you out there who don't know what a pickin' party is (and I didn't until arriving in Nashville) I will do my best to explain. A Pickin'  Party is a group of musicians who get together and play music: usually bluegrass and old country songs. They stand in a circle of sorts and someone picks a song and everyone joins in. When a musician gets tired, or wants a beer, another person who plays the same instrument steps in and the music continues. Last night's Pickin' Party was hosted at Josh Brand's house in honor of his Uncle (and banjo player) coming down for a visit from Michigan. There were two groups of musicians: one in the living room and one on the back porch. It was incredible. There was homemade chili and cornbread, a fire in the backyard with people going on wood runs to keep it burning, music, music lovers, artists, people from the ages of 21-70, beer, talking and lots of laughter. At the end of the night someone made mussels in a green curry sauce with fresh bread. In true Nashville fashion there was at least one famous person (in this case a Grammy winning guitarist) who never once mentioned his fame (I didn't actually know until I got home). He just hung out played music and told jokes by the fire. I can honestly say that Nashville is one of the friendliest and most down to earth cities I have ever been to.

When I say I will miss Nashville, I truly mean it.

I'm also posting some photos from around Nashville. One of the awesome full moon and another from the Veteran's day parade where old time Hatch employee and Miehle runner, Dan, participated.

Sun, 06 Nov 2011 12:51:54 -0800 Mostly Non-Hatch Update. http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/mostly-non-hatch-update http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/mostly-non-hatch-update I don't really have a lot of time outside of Hatch since I'm there Monday through Saturday and when I do have time to do anything, it usually involves cooking, grocery shopping or updating this thing. However, every once in awhile I get out and do something.

When B&P (mom and step dad) were here we ate a lot of food. We went to Jack's BBQ, Past Perfect, Bongo Java's, Bill got a hot dog from the hot dog stand in East Nashville, we went to Beyond the Edge, Pied Piper Eatery and Mad Donna's. Other than food we also went to Hatch, The huge Flea Market at the Fair grounds, Grimey's Record Store (I would have bought so many things if I had any money what-so-ever) and we went to McKay's Bookstore.

I have been frequenting the Goodwill that's close to the house. I have found some super amazing clothes and of course some very ridiculous ones... usually with brilliant tags. ( I posted a few photos of those).

Because it's Nashville, whenever I hang out with Jhesi, it's usually to listen to music. I am in no way complaining about that either because the music that is played live here is amazing, including Jhesi herself. She played at Brown's on Halloween with Jann, Dan & Susie.

We also go to Layla's (a bluegrass bar on Broadway) after work sometimes. They have a ton of license plates on the ceiling which looks really killer. I like going in there, even if I don't take advantage of their $1 PBR before 6 pm.

I have also been making friends with like, every pet I come in contact with. Jhesi has an adorable chihuahua named Ernesto that has a fair amount of photos on my phone by now. She also has three cats. Two of which are mother and daughter and tend to do cute things like cuddle on the kitchen counter. I have also made friends with the neighborhood cat family. Mainly the cute orange tabby kitten. I figured it was time that I posted some photos of all of them.

The last thing that I will mention is the Bluebird Cafe. I really didn't know what to expect when Kathy (Hatch employee and fellow Oregonian) invited us to the Bluebird to hear her husband Craig play. I wasn't too happy with the $7 breadsticks I ordered (there's usually some form of a cover- on Friday you had to spend at least $7 on food and/or alcohol). But the music was incredible and the whole experience was more than amazing. Their were 4 musicians playing: Craig Carothers, Annie Mosher, Tony Arata & Scott Kinsey. They were sitting across from each other like a compass and would take turns playing a song (usually with a lot of commentary most of which was hilarious between each song). It was amazing. I wish I had enough money to buy all of their CD's. I purchased two, which was even too much for my wallet, but I couldn't help it. They were just so amazing.

I couldn't remember how to spell Craig's last name, so I looked it up. Turns out he's heading to Oregon on the 11th- 13th. Including playing at the Kennedy School on the 13th. He was awesome and really funny too. So any of my PDX friends out there that might actually read this should check it out... If you do, tell him Megan, a current Hatchling, sent you.

Sun, 06 Nov 2011 12:08:55 -0800 The weeks are flying by 6,7,8! http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/the-weeks-are-flying-by-678 http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/the-weeks-are-flying-by-678 Well, I have been so crazy busy that I haven't had a chance to update in awhile. My mom, step dad & Chris were in town two weeks ago and last weekend I met up with my brother's old girlfriend. Since I only trek my computer to Bongo Java's on Sunday, I haven't been able to update anything! Ah!

I have to keep re-reading my last full post to remember where I left off, it seems like so long ago that I was working on the stuff I mentioned.

So let's see, I CAN post the Willie poster now... the even happened Oct. 20th. The Willie poster was the first job that all four of us interns worked on, which seems like ages ago. Sundy & I were able to print our wedding poster and that you can also see because the client picked it up. I finished the Christmas Poster, which you can't see for awhile, but it was one of the more difficult lock ups I've had. I also finished the California job and the 2 year old's Birthday poster... I'll post those when I can as well I think I can at least post a sneak preview of those.

What about new jobs you ask? Well, I started and finished 3 other posters and there's a high chance they will be my last jobs while I'm here, which is more than just a little sad. The last three were: Nile's Bluegrass Festival, 3 Doors Down & Drew Holcomb. I will be able to post a few of them soon.

With the Drew Holcomb poster I was able to do a pressure print. I'll have to take some better pictures of the process before I try and explain it. But I am really happy I got to try it out and I can't wait to get home and experiment more with them!

We had another week long intern from Minneapolis. Morgan was pretty awesome and definitely was a wonderful person to meet and chat with. She also got a tattoo while she was here of a sweet looking number 5, it turned out way cool. I hope that our paths will cross again soon.

I am still so happy that we are able to come in and work on our own projects on Saturday's. I finished printing the first broken type linocut and yesterday I prepped 4 smaller ones. I also printed four other posters. Three of them are surprises, so I can't post them yet. And the last one was just a ridiculous poster that I wanted to make for absolutely no reason at all except that I really wanted an excuse to use large ligatures and a super killer tuscan style exclamation point. So what exactly did I decide to print using these two elements? A poster that says 'Waffle Fight' of course.

Tomorrow marks the start of our 9th week here. I can't believe it. I feel simultaneously that I have been here forever and not long enough. That I know everyone so well, and not at all. I told Jhesi a few weeks ago (I think) that I've been getting a very "Summer Camp" vibe lately. And not in a bad way because I loved going to camp and usually cried when I had to leave. But we have all been smashed together for a short amount of time and have become so close in that time that it seems impossible to go back to my "normal" life. I am definitely going to miss Hatch, all the people I have met both in and outside of Hatch and Nashville in general. I have to soak in my last two weeks here and hope that I will be able to come back  at some point because this city and the people that make it up have had a real impact on me.

Photo_oct_07_4_54_06_pm

Okay this isn't a full update because my Mom, Bill & Chris were visiting this weekend and I didn't have a chance to update over the weekend.

I'll update more, but in the meantime, here's a pic of Huey my Halloween costume inspiration.

Oh, and a shout out to Jenny M. & Tim D. for sending me mail. You are both awesome.

Sun, 16 Oct 2011 12:51:02 -0700 Yikes! Week 5! http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/yikes-week-5 http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/yikes-week-5 Okay, once again this post is going to be pretty freakin' vague. Sundy and I are still waiting to hear back from our wedding client, so we haven't had a chance to print that job. I can't post the Willie one because it doesn't take place until the 20th of Oct.

I've gotten approval on my Christmas poster (but haven't printed it yet, and won't be able to post photos for a long time) and I got a job doing a 2-year-old's birthday poster. The family it pretty cool. They do a poster for each of their kid's birthdays until the age of 5. This one is a snowball & hot cocoa party (how adorable). It's been approved, but once again I can't really post it until December.

I also got a new job for a band in California. I'm still working on the layout for that one. For some reason it's the most difficult poster I've had to design. I'm confident it will end up being sweet, but I have definitely been struggling more with that one.

This week we also had a 5th intern. Mark hails from outside of London and is doing a whirlwind letterpress tour in the U.S. He was up at Hamilton in Two Rivers, WI for 2 weeks, came to Hatch for a week and is now on his way to Knoxville to hang with Yee-Haw for a week. He was a fun guy to have around and a total letterpress nerd, so it was a lot of fun to talk nerdy letterpress things with him. I doubt he will read this, but Have fun at Yee-Haw!

We also got the okay to come in and work on Saturdays. Super Super Awesome. I went in yesterday and printed my first non-job poster. I'd post a photo of it, but it's kind of a surprise for someone. It's two colors though and I think it turned out pretty well. It's definitely different from the other stuff I've been printing, but I'm totally okay with that.

I also am going to start carving a linoleum block. I really wanted to do a poster using broken type and started talking to Bethany. I knew the type was going to be fragile and a pain to print and Bethany said it made more sense to cut a lino for it instead. I haven't actually carved anything since high-school so I'm really excited to start this one. It's going to be a little crazy, and it will probably drive me nuts that I can't change the position of the type, but I think it will be a really good learning experience.  (I posted a photo of the broken type I proofed).

Brad is out for all of next week (and last Friday) he's going to be in Utah and we are going to miss him while he's gone.

Oh right, it was really foggy one morning so I took some photos. Also I rode my bike 6 days in a row. My legs are going to be killer.

Sun, 16 Oct 2011 11:45:34 -0700 The Dombeck's in Nashville http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/the-dombecks-in-nashville http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/the-dombecks-in-nashville I wanted to make a more complete post about last weekend. Last weekend Chris' parents and youngest brother came to see me in Nashville. It was incredibly wonderful to see them and to show them (and in some ways myself) around Nashville.

I really wanted to do things that they would enjoy and I hope that worked out. It was definitely a packed weekend.

They arrived on Friday and Chris & I headed to their hotel to watch the rest of the Brewer's game but we actually left when they went into overtime. We headed to Brown's Diner and ate a whole bunch of cheeseburgers and found out that the Brewers one very quickly in the next inning. Which was awesome.

Saturday we met up and headed out to the Loveless. It was funny because they also had an art sale & bluegrass event going on. It took us an hour and a half to sit down and eat, which at first seemed daunting, but the time went by quite fast. We walked around all the little shops and then played their bag toss game. Chris won. Against both Me & Sam.

I think we all ate a fair amount of their famous biscuits.

After that we headed back downtown and I gave them a tour of Hatch. We also walked around the Ryman Auditorium and went to the Country Music Hall of Fame. After that we headed to The Flying Saucer and had some food and drinks... I had a Rum & Coke with a Vanilla Bean infused Vodka made in Nashville! I'll definitely have to find some more of that because it was pretty killer.

We then headed to Jack's BBQ as Chris has been craving their smoked turkey since January. Sadly, they were out of it (Chris- You just have to come back!). We also ended up standing in front of a group that was also from Wisconsin. So Chris' parents talked to them while we waited in line.

I know you think that Saturday should be over by now, but you don't know how we roll. After Jack's we went to Mike's for Ice Cream. It was just as tasty as always. With full bellies and tired legs, we called it a night.

On Sunday Chris & I headed to Bongo Java's for Coffee, Tea & Internet. After that we met up with the rest of the Dombeck's to have brunch at the Holland House. The food and drinks were amazing, but the service was pretty freaking slow. Usually I'm okay with taking my time eating, but this was even slow for my taste.

It was such a nice day that we decided to go to Cheekwood. It was incredibly pretty there. They had a miniature train set up that traveled around reconstructions of major buildings & locations in Tennessee... I feel like a few of my favorite toddlers would have loved seeing these... especially because they had a Thomas train. Cheekwood also has a sculpture garden. I was pretty happy to find out that they had a James Turrell piece. (Look for the pictures with a large circle). The grounds themselves were beautiful and I think it was really nice to walk around outside on such a nice day.

After Cheekwood we went back to the hotel to catch the rest of the Brewer's game & ate room service appetizers. After the Brewer's won, we headed to Mello Mushroom for Pizza. Chris and I had been there before and the pizza is pretty amazing, but once again our service was awful. We waited about 25 minutes to just get drinks on our table. And we had to ask 3 different people multiple times before they switched the TV to the Packer's game. The pizza was still good.

I absolutely love the Dombeck (and Friel) family. I am incredibly lucky to be with someone with such an amazing family. After we ate they bought my groceries. I know that sounds like a somewhat easy thing to do, but my money situation is pretty rough right now and getting groceries was an amazing, wonderful and kind thing to do for me and I am so grateful for it and I cannot begin to thank them enough for everything they have done for me this weekend and for the past (almost) five years.

On Monday morning Chris and I met up with everyone for breakfast before I had to go to Hatch and everyone else had to drive home. It was a wonderful weekend and I really hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

Sun, 09 Oct 2011 09:00:54 -0700 Week FOUR!? http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-four http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-four I can't believe it's been a month.

This week was a Willie (Nelson) filled week. I can't show the final poster yet, but one of the 3 Willie posters this week was the first that the interns designed and printed. I'm pretty proud of how that poster turned out and I was lucky enough to print both layers and do a major part of the poster design.

We also were split up into 2 groups and each of the groups got two jobs. Sundy and I had a second Willie poster and a Wedding poster and Kate and Jenny had a Smithsonian poster and a Wedding poster. I'll post those when I can.

At the end of the week we were also given our first solo jobs... I'm doing a Christmas Concert.

I guess this is where my posts might be a little short simply because I can't post quite as much detail on my weekly designs.
I did go to Brown's Diner last Sunday to listen to some music. There are a couple photos from that.

The other reason this post is so short is because the Dombeck Clan (sans Tim) came to visit me! When Chris told me his parents were planning a trip, I became extremely happy. I started to make a list of things to do with them, with my mom & step dad and when Chris makes a solo trip. I'm pretty happy to say we just about covered everything on the Dombeck Trip list.

Here's the basics:
Brown's Diner for Cheeseburgers
Loveless Cafe for Breakfast
Hatch Show Print for obvious reasons
Walked around the Ryman Auditorium Building
Toured the Country Music Hall of Fame
Jack's BBQ for the awesome BBQ
Mike's Ice Cream

Today we are going to the Holland House for Brunch, somewhere to watch the Brewer's game & possibly the Station Inn to hear some bluegrass.

I have to report this because I'm crazy proud. The first time I rode my bike to Hatch, it took me 40 minutes. This morning, it took 20.

Freaking Awesome.

Sat, 01 Oct 2011 13:39:05 -0700 Week Three is Complete, Part 3- Designing!?!? http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-three-is-complete-part-3-designing http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-three-is-complete-part-3-designing So after the setting of type, the printing of the posters we set, Brad split us up into two groups (2 interns each) and gave us our first job. The first one is a reprint for the Grand Ol' Opry. Sundy and I have a 3-color crazy poster and Kate & Jenny have Carrie Underwood's induction poster.

The poster we have has 3 colors that pretty much all overlap. There's a chance I jumped on the chance to reprint this one instead of the Carrie Underwood. It seemed more complicated and I dig a challenge. Sundy and I have printed the first two colors, but I don't have any pictures of that, just the first layer locked up in the press.

We also got our first (non-reprint) job. I can't post anything about that one, but it's really exciting.

I also have a final print of our Coffee poster & we finished the postcards.

Other things that happened this week:

It was Bluegrass Week. And because of my awesome roommate/owner-of-the-house-I'm-sleeping-in-for-two-months (who was actually singing at one point in our place and I totally thought it was a recording) I ended up meeting Bob Moore. Look him up. He's pretty much played bass on every good song ever. He's played with Elvis, Roy Orbison, Kenny Rogers, Burl Ives, etc. He's also full of awesome stories, that I am definitely keeping to myself (or at least not posting it to a blog).

So there goes week 3.

Sat, 01 Oct 2011 12:53:11 -0700 Week Three is Complete, Part 2: Printing A Proof, Keep it Simple http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-three-is-complete-part-2-printing-a-proo http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-three-is-complete-part-2-printing-a-proo The way Hatch prints proofs is awesome. Here's the basics:

- Put some heavy (metal) furniture on all sides of your design.
- Use a dark color to ink (frequently there will already be something out)
- Ink heavier than you would on the press & ink at an angle as to not lift any type. Make sure to go over it a few times (at least once w/o re-inking the brayer) to make sure the ink is even.
- Lay a piece of tracing paper down & rub w/ your hand (or a spoon) over the whole design. Make sure any small letters come through.
- Take the paper off, lay it on the ground and sprinkle some cornstarch (or offset powder) on the paper in a line. Grab the two corners closest to that line and let the powder slowly travel the length of the design.
- Pour the remainder back. Use a rag to dust off the rest of the powder.
- Check your proof.

The first poster we completed from start to finish was a restrike of a Roy Orbison poster.

Sat, 01 Oct 2011 12:19:05 -0700 Week Three is Complete, Part 1: Set Type, Keep it Simple http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-three-is-complete-part-1-set-type-keep-i http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/week-three-is-complete-part-1-set-type-keep-i
SETTING TYPE
This week we started setting type. The biggest thing I took from it was Brad saying, "Keep it Simple."

Instead of using 3 single pica reglets use one piece of 3 pica furniture.

If a letter is cut out from its original shape, it is so that you can kern the letter closer to another letter with a cut out. This drove me totally insane before, but now that I know it's useful, I'm not so crazy.

Keep it Simple? Don't use the cut letters if you don't have to, it will just make more work for yourself.

When setting type, try and use letters that give you the largest chance that they will print easily. Check the letters be checking the glare. Check for bumps, texture, etc. If you have a letter that has ink still on it, there's a chance it didn't print well before and didn't get cleaned right away (hence the ink). Also check the material of the letter. Sometimes replacement letters were created using cheaper materials or were cut from linoleum. If possible, avoid these too.

The composing stick is the telling sign as to how something will be in the press. Use the same stick and don't change its settings, that way everything will be the tight to the same length making it easier to set things up in the press. If you need to adjust a line after the fact, put it back in the the composing stick.

Sat, 24 Sep 2011 12:40:37 -0700 2nd Week Has Come to an End, Part 3- Posters & Postcards, Oh My! http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/2nd-week-has-come-to-an-end-part-3-posters-po http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/2nd-week-has-come-to-an-end-part-3-posters-po The big ol' Miehle is busted and because of that, larger orders were being printed on the Vandercook Universal Three (a.k.a. "the back press"). One of the prints that needed to go out was an 800 count 3-color poster. (I have pictures, but I can only post the ones that you can't tell who the client is or what the final poster looks like until after the client gets them... so stay tuned, I'll post them later).

We also printed the first layer for one of Bethany's posters... I can't remember who the client was, but I'll get a good final picture of that poster once the client gets it. So here's some random sneaky pics.

We also printed some postcards. We were printing them on the "Front Press" and we were able to change to colors while we were printing, which was a lot of fun. We did the same with the second color. I tried a few "Split Fountains" (using two colors at once, they blend in the middle due to the occilating roller on the press) and one of them came out awesome. I'll try to find it on Monday and get a good picture.

So that's about it for the 2nd week. I'm super stoked to see what next week brings.

Sat, 24 Sep 2011 11:40:03 -0700 2nd week has come and gone, Part 2 The Party is Totally This Way. http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/2nd-week-has-come-and-gone-part-2-the-party-i http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/2nd-week-has-come-and-gone-part-2-the-party-i There's a pretty awesome story behind this poster that I am now going to bore you with.

Chris' brother Tim turned 21 on the 22nd. (Happy Birthday Tim) I really wanted to send him a Hatch Poster for his birthday. I figured it was appropriate. But I had a hard time choosing which poster to send. I was thinking the Triple Johnny (Cash) would be sufficient, but I really wasn't sold on it. Then I saw this poster in the corner that read, "The Party is This Way". It seemed so fitting for a 21st birthday present and for someone who just moved into their first apartment. The only problem was there was only one poster left and it was looking a little haggard.

I started saying this to one of the other interns when Brad comes over to me and asks me to help him collect everything to reprint a poster. Guess what. Same poster. How perfect is that?

So not only do I get to send Tim the poster I wanted to send him, it's also the first poster that we printed and the first poster I helped set up to print.

How perfect is that.

Tim, if you are reading this, the poster will be in the mail on Monday. I tried to send it out today, but the Post Office closed at noon.

Sat, 24 Sep 2011 11:25:20 -0700 2nd week has come and gone, PART 1- The Presses. http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/2nd-week-has-come-and-gone-part-1-the-presses http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/2nd-week-has-come-and-gone-part-1-the-presses Because of the annoyance of posting from my phone, I've decided to make a multi-post update for this week... We did a lot, so this might take a little while.

We have now learned how to use all of the Vandercook presses. There are three.

The SP-15 (a.k.a. the "Front Press") which is used for slightly smaller items because it is a little smaller in size. We printed the first Coffee layer on it, but we can't print the second because it is just slightly too large. We also used it to print 2-color postcards & 2-color thank you cards for the Country Music Hall of Fame. A big difference between the "Front Press" and the other presses is that the bed can't be adjusted. Since it's a Proof Press the press bed isn't even type high, but slightly larger so you could slip a galley tray into the press. Because of this, Hatch has a metal plate in the press (the same height as a galley) and to adjust it further, you slip paper between that metal plate and the press bed. The one thing you have to remember is to listen for the clicks. It should click twice when you get to the end of the press. If you don't hear the two clicks, whatever you are printing will print a copy on the tympan and then continue to print on the back of your future prints until it runs out of ink. In other words, a pain and a total "D'oh" moment.

The Universal 1 (a.k.a. the "Mid Press"). It's a great press and pretty much everything can be printed on it. If the job is over 150 (or so) or it is slightly larger than the normal Hatch size, then it usually gets kicked to the "Back Press." We printed some of the second Coffee layer on the Uni 1, and we printed all of the "The Party is This Way" on it. As well as a few jobs for the other Hatch employees.

The "Back Press" is a Vandercook Universal 3. It is a semi-automatic press. I really didn't think I would enjoy printing on it, but it is crazy awesome. The biggest thing about it (other than its size) is you get to stand in one spot instead of following the cylinder of the press down the press bed. All you have to do (and this is pretty simplified) is load the paper into the grippers and press a toggle button. The paper goes down the press bed and you press another button to bring it back. When you bring it back, the paper goes up two little straps and comes back right where you loaded it in (I'll try and get a picture or a video to show this, because it's kind of hard to explain.) We printed an 800 count 3-color poster on it as well as the first layer of another poster and the beginning of a 1000 count 2-color poster.

I should also say that when I say "we" I generally mean the 4 interns of which I am one. However for some of the posters we haven't been the only ones printing (like the 800 count 3-color poster). We (interns) haven't been setting up the client posters for printing either, I believe we are going to start learning that next week, but for this past week (for client jobs) we have been helping out with the printing. If that makes sense...

Anyway. those are the presses.

Next up, The Part is Totally This Way.

Thu, 22 Sep 2011 17:09:00 -0700 I found a dog. http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/i-found-a-dog http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/i-found-a-dog

Well this isn't exactly about Hatch, but it did happen on my way there
this morning.

I left early this morning in hopes that I could mail a 21st birthday present off to Chris' little brother before work. As I was riding my bike, this little puppy comes running towards me (across a major road mind you). I got her to come over to me and she rolled onto her tummy.

I checked her tags, but she only had a home again tag (which hadn't been activated yet) & a Humane Society tag (they didn't open until 10 a.m. and it was just before 9). My last ditch effort was to call Animal Control... they couldn't give me any time frame, so I sat with the little pup and waited.

10 o'clock arrives and I call the Humane Society. Turns out she was adopted 3 days ago and at the shelter her name was Moonpie.

I called her owner and he came and grabbed her.

On my way home from Hatch today, I ran into them again. I realized I never asked what her new name was...

Luna.

Fri, 16 Sep 2011 16:43:00 -0700 1st Week & 1st Prints http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/1st-week-1st-prints http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/1st-week-1st-prints My first week at Hatch has come to an end and I don't think it could have ended better.  Today we got to print on the front press (it's a vandercook but I don't remember which type). I can see why people dig vandercooks now. We also printed on the C&P pilot. When I get home I'm going to have to tweak mine some more because it is definitely not printing the same way the Hatch one prints.  The poster we are printing is one of the most popular restrikes... I can say it's not really my favorite, but then again it is coffee related and I don't drink coffee.  It was also very messy. We were hand-inking (actually using brayers) each print and we had like 5 or 6 colors and brayers for each. It can look cool, but I am so used to staying pretty clean when I'm printing that I started to get annoyed when I was running back to wash my hands off multiple times.  Next week we'll finish up this first layer and print the next one. I think we are shooting for around 300.  It was also kind of interesting to see how the four of us interns approached inking the plate. I think it's going to lead to a plethora of variety on the final prints. I look forward to seeing them (and keeping my favorites!)  I have no idea what my plans are for this first weekend. Hopefully I'll get to bum along with 2 of the other interns and see some of the sites. If not, I might ride or take the bus into town and wander around taking pics with my legit camera instead of my phone.   p.s. The last photo is some crazy dried ink.

Fri, 16 Sep 2011 12:11:00 -0700 My Bike is at Hatch! http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/my-bike-is-at-hatch http://mlkathatch.posterous.com/my-bike-is-at-hatch

Today I rode my bike. Two years ago that was a common occurrence, but since moving to Georgia a year ago, I have been on my bike once.

It's a great feeling and I'm so happy to be able to ride again. Weather permitting, I'll be riding the two days a week that I don't drive in... plus to the grocery store and anywhere else I want or need to go.

It took just under 30 minutes to get in today which is awesome because I took my sweet time and took some pictures. I allotted myself an hour, so I also got in quite early and got a cup of oj from Panera. Sweet Sweet Orange Juice.

Today we are printing for the first time at Hatch. I'll update more on that later, but it's pretty cool. We're doing a restrike of super popular coffee poster and we are hand-inking (well, we're really using brayers) them so they are all different.

PLEASE excuse the weirdness of these posts. I've been trying to post everything from my phone, and it keeps either deleting what I write, or spacing it weird or not spacing it at all. When I can be on a computer for any amount of time (granted I'm writing this on a computer right now) I'll fix those annoyances.
